Bazzite for gaming
A documentation-based look at image selection, Gaming Mode, desktop use, hardware limits, updates and rollback.
Key takeaways
- Choose the image for your exact device, graphics hardware and preferred session.
- Start with the prepared gaming tools; learn the separate application and OS update paths.
- System rollback helps recover the OS. Keep personal-file backups separately.

Overview
Bazzite is a prepared gaming system in the Fedora Atomic Desktop family. KDE Plasma and GNOME are desktop interfaces; their Bazzite images derive from Kinoite and Silverblue respectively. Its appeal is the combination of gaming defaults and coordinated system updates. Bazzite’s Fedora comparison
Who this is for
Consider Bazzite if you want less initial gaming-software assembly and are comfortable installing desktop applications separately from the core operating system. It serves desktop and laptop users as well as selected handheld and living-room setups. “Prepared” does not mean every game or device works without checking.
How installation works
Use the project’s image selector for your device, GPU, desktop and Gaming Mode preference. Write the selected image to a USB drive and follow its graphical installation guide. Secure Boot is supported through project-key enrollment. The live environment does not reproduce every installed-system hardware capability. Installation guide
Before choosing a disk, complete the Windows migration checklist. Keep a verified backup and identify which drive contains it. If retaining Windows, follow the installation route documented for that layout rather than assuming every installer’s alongside option behaves the same way.
What gaming setup looks like
Steam and Lutris are preinstalled. Heroic and Faugus are additional launcher choices, not applications to assume are already present. Start with the supplied Steam installation and one game before adding more software. Bazzite favors graphical Flatpak applications, with other routes for command-line tools and containers. Flatpak installs an application separately from the OS image. Software guide
The project documents MangoHud for performance information, controller integrations including xone, and accelerated H.264 decoding. These are features of its preparation, not evidence that every controller or video format will work in every application. Project repository
Desktop and Gaming Mode
KDE and GNOME provide conventional desktops for browsing, files and applications. The handheld/HTPC Gaming Mode is a Gamescope-based session designed around Steam. Choose the session for your use case; NVIDIA Gaming Mode is currently labeled beta. Bazzite features
Updates and maintenance
An image-based update replaces the core OS as a coordinated version, rather than asking you to assemble its packages individually. Desktop images download updates during suitable idle periods; OS changes apply after reboot. Deck images use manual Gaming Mode updating by default. Update guide
The previous OS deployment provides a rollback route. Normally two deployments are retained, and pinning can preserve one. This does not roll back personal files or automatically downgrade separately installed applications. Keep backups even when system rollback is available. Rollback guide
Hardware considerations
Check the exact GPU and device against the current hardware guide. Gaming Mode support differs between AMD, Intel Arc and NVIDIA configurations. A successful desktop boot does not establish suspend, docking, display or controller support. Windows NTFS game libraries are not a supported Bazzite gaming-storage configuration. Strengths and tradeoffs
Our assessment: substantial gaming preparation and OS recovery make Bazzite worth investigating for a focused gaming machine. The tradeoff is learning its app-management model. A tutorial written for ordinary Fedora package installation may not be the right route here.
