Distros / Documentation-based guide
Understand CachyOS’s rolling update model, optional gaming packages, hardware setup and recovery choices, including its separate handheld edition.
Key takeaways
- Check installation requirements and plan the disk layout before starting.
- Install the gaming packages you need rather than treating every optional tool as essential.
- Plan for rolling updates, project notices and a recovery method you understand.

Overview
CachyOS is an Arch-based rolling distribution with performance-oriented repositories and kernels. A rolling release receives ongoing package upgrades rather than following a fixed sequence of long-term major releases. Desktop and kernel choices are part of its appeal, but do not prove universal frame-rate gains. Project overview
Who this is for
Consider CachyOS if you want current software and are willing to read maintenance notices and make some system choices. You do not need to tune every setting. The relevant commitment is learning how your installation updates and recovers when something needs attention.
How installation works
The graphical Calamares installer helps with setup, but installation needs a reliable internet connection. Check the project’s CPU requirements and disk instructions. Its desktop guide warns about alongside-install reliability and prefers manual partitioning. That is a real preparation task for a Windows user, even with a graphical installer. Preparation, installation
Secure Boot is disabled for the documented installation route. A separate post-install procedure covers key enrollment and boot-manager details. Treat that as additional administration rather than an automatic default. Secure Boot setup
Read the migration guide before changing disks. Stop if you cannot identify the Windows, data and backup drives with confidence; a distro preference is not a reason to rush a partition decision.
What gaming setup looks like
CachyOS Hello offers gaming package installation. The documented application group includes Steam, Heroic, Lutris, Faugus, Gamescope, GOverlay and MangoHud; supporting packages include Proton-CachyOS tooling. This is a facilitated install path, not proof that every desktop image preinstalls the complete set. Gaming packages
Start with the gaming packages you actually need and a compatibility-checked game. MangoHud provides measurements; Gamescope manages a game display session. Neither should become an unexplained requirement for every player. See Understanding Proton before choosing custom compatibility tools.
Desktop and handheld experiences
CachyOS offers a broad choice of desktop environments and window managers. Choose an interface you can navigate comfortably before exploring optional tuning. Its separate handheld edition uses KDE and includes gaming applications and Gaming Mode switching for devices named in the guide, including Steam Deck, ROG Ally and Legion Go. It is not official Valve SteamOS. Handheld guide
Updates and maintenance
Updates use Arch-style package transactions, with graphical options and optional offline updating documented. Watch project notices for manual intervention. Keep a record of changes when diagnosing a regression instead of changing several packages and settings at once. Update guidance, FAQ
Btrfs is a filesystem, and Snapper manages snapshots of its contents. Installations using the documented setup can take snapshots around package transactions. The default root snapshots do not cover every subvolume or replace backups. Verify what your installation saves and how you would restore it. Snapshots
Hardware considerations
The project’s hardware detection selects driver packages, including NVIDIA profiles. Hybrid laptops may still need application-specific graphics offloading: choosing which GPU renders a game. Check the documented launch route and then verify the result in the game. Hardware detection, dual-GPU guidance
Strengths and tradeoffs
Our assessment: CachyOS suits someone who values current software and system choice. Installation, updates and recovery involve more decisions than choosing a prepared image. That does not make it “experts only,” and it does not make optional kernel changes necessary for enjoying games.
Next steps
